Chandler is a suburb of Phoenix, the city this show is traditionally attributed to. This show was at an ampitheatre, one of the few pre-1986 outdoor shows Queen would play - in the desert, in July. A fan recalls: "The fans waited for ages, drinking in the AZ heat, for Queen to come out. The announcer got us all hyped up, the lights dimmed and the audience rushed the stage to see Queen. After the rush I was about 5 or 6 people back from the edge of the stage at right center. Instead of Queen we got the unlisted, unannounced opening act - an in-your-face raw, basic, rockabilly opener. Good at what they did and hand-picked by Queen. But not what the audience was expecting nor came to see. Kind of like Jimi opening for The Monkees... The audience generally was NOT happy. There were lots and LOTS of boos and early in The Blasters' set someone threw a wine bottle right past the lead singer and into the drum set. I remember that clearly. Their opening set was cut short, and Brian May came out and scolded us." Freddie greets the audience after Jailhouse Rock, during which he does a few Crazy Little Thing Called love adlibs. After a few more shows, Jailhouse Rock would jump right into the fast We Will Rock You, after which Freddie would say his few words to build the excitement. After Let Me Entertain You, he sits down at the piano and offers a marginally clever play on words: "We're gonna play some games with you right now." He then starts the familiar piano intro of Play The Game. These early versions of the song have an extra vocal chorus at the end before Brian improvises over one more cycle. In the nearly 100 degrees heat, Queen's set was also cut short (presumably Keep Yourself Alive and the solo spots were axed). Freddie is sweating bullets already by Mustapha. He sings the intro to the Jazz album track, and replying to the line "Allah I will pray for you," he adds, "Like fuck we will!" and then begins the meat of the song on the piano. Later: "This next song's straight down to earth pure simple rock and roll; the kind of songs that Roger likes to write. This is a new one too. It's called Rock It... I think!" That's Freddie referring to its full title being "Rock It (Prime Jive)," as the band couldn't decide which name to give the song and ultimately used both. Freddie hits and sustains the highest note of the first verse ever so cleanly. Brian mimics the synth lines on the guitar remarkably well. Freddie's voice is in superb shape. He does a neat little vocal bit before Save Me, reminiscent of Somebody To Love. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" he says part way through, as he's making his way over to Brian at the piano to start the song as he usually does. |

This copy is about the same sound quality, and has a few seconds more tape at the beginning of the show and a slight bit more tape at the end of Get Down Make Love. |
