All 38,000 tickets for this show sold out in an hour, setting an attendance record in Newcastle at the time. The profits went to the local Save The Children fund. Status Quo and Zeno were the support acts (INXS were supposed to be on the bill, but the truck with their gear crashed on the way to the gig). INXS were slated to be the opening act, but their tour bus broke down and they couldn't make the gig. Status Quo played a longer set to compensate. Freddie, with a full hankerchief in his hand after Under Pressure: "Now that I've taken the snot out of my nose we can carry on." After the rumour dispelling speech, he adds, "We're not bad for four tired old Queens, are we?" Brian makes his entrance to I Want To Break Free a couple bars too early. While he plays the bit again in the expected place where the chord changes, Freddie says, "That's better." Before Love Of My Life, Brian recalls 1979. "It's been a few years since we did Newcastle City Hall. It seems like yesterday." He acknowledges the audience for their enthusiasm. I'd just like to say you're a joy to play to. You're great." There were quite a few kids from the Save The Children fund in the VIP seats (who got to meet the band after the show). After visiting some of the SCF activities in the area, Brian dedicated Is This The World We Created to them. "The proceeds of this concert are going to the Save The Children people." He acknowledges the kids in front of him, "For you, and to all the people who work for the Save The Children the whole year round." Tonight the band reprise the last heavy verse and chorus of Tutti Frutti, something which they'd do at every remaining show on the tour. After coming out for We Will Rock You with no flag at the Slane show a few days back, attached to Freddie tonight is a long white cape hanging around his neck, making him look nothing less than majestic as he runs around the stage before he starts singing. He'd do this again at the Wembley, Manchester, and Knebworth Park shows. TV reports aired pro footage of One Vision and A Kind Of Magic, ![]() ![]() ![]() Footage of the band leaving the stage and going through the corridor is seen in The Magic Years documentary (Brian is seen with his Children In Need shirt, confirming it to be from Newcastle). This show was properly recorded by the band. Most of the show was filmed from the audience, but it's a very distant video with no zoom. Here is a review of the show. Pics 6 through 30 were submitted by Alessio Rizzitelli. Pic 31 is from Fabio Minero. |

This is a great recording. The last 90 seconds of Now I'm Here are missing, and it's filled in with the video source. |

Wardour bootlegged the audience tape listed above. They also included a DVD of the audience film in the package. Here's a link to the always-reliable GS review: http://www.collectorsmusicreviews.com |
