The Teardrop Explodes opened for Queen tonight, and Heart opened on the second night in Edinburgh, as confirmed to me by someone who attended the shows. It was clearly a very hot day outside, because Freddie's comments after Play The Game would indicate that a few people came into the venue not wearing too much. "Oh fucking lord, I didn't know this was gonna be a bath house." He adds, "We can all have a shower together," as he pours some beer on the front rows as he usually does at this point of the show. "Alright, we're gonna do some new songs for you tonight. Is everybody alright right here, huh? In the back? Okay, let's carry on. This is called Staying Power." Before Love Of My Life, Brian has something to say about the heat, too. "They didn't tell me this was gonna be as hot as this up here. If we're gonna survive this, I think we should all cool down for a little or so, you think?" Brian then plays around for a brief moment, something that resembles his preamble to Love Of My Life as heard on the Live Killers album in 1979. The audience must have sounded better than most as they sang along, since Freddie says they sound "Fuckin' beautiful" half way through. "That's the only way to describe it." In fact, the audience sings every word along with most of the songs, just like a few nights ago in Leeds. This is one of those occasions where they sing along with the third chorus of Save Me, even though Brian is playing a (picture perfect) guitar solo during the first 4 bars of it. Freddie sings the song beautifully tonight. In his solo spot, Brian plays riffs from I Go Crazy again as he did in Vienna a few weeks back. After Under Pressure, Freddie says, "Maybe one day David [Bowie] will come over and do it with us. What do you think?" He made the suggestion on stage many times, and audiences always approved of the idea. Roger's Fat Bottomed count-in is a bit more enthusiastic than usual. After thanking the audience at the end of the show, Freddie shouts "Hot Space, Hot Space!" again as he had in Hamburg a couple weeks ago, and adds "Good luck to you". This brief review could be of either night in Edinburgh. The pictures, submitted by Fabio Minero, could be from either night in Edinburgh. |

This slightly distant recording sounds great, although it's a bit sharp in the top end. |
