On the third night in South Africa, Freddie left the stage in tears of disappointment after the fourth song, Somebody To Love. Freddie stood up from the piano and left the stage. The auditorium went dark, but not after long the crowd did the 'stomp stomp clap' of We Will Rock You. The concert organizer soon emerged to reveal to the disappointed audience that the show was over.
A local crew member recalls that many of the shows were Saturday nights [three of them], which is party night in South Africa. He says Mercury had partied so hard on the evening of Oct 6th that he missed 2pm soundcheck the next day, and was so hungover that he was puking side stage and had to blow off the show three songs in. This would be the one and only time that the excess had Queen unable to finish a show as planned.
As a result of this, the next two shows (October 9 and 10) would be cancelled, allowing him time to rest up.
This article from the October 10 Star (sent in by Mr. Scully) insists the band were intent on doing a show that night, which means it was pulled last minute. All the remaining scheduled shows would go on as planned.
Someone who attended some of the Sun City shows not only recalls Freddie losing his voice at a couple of the gigs, but even seeing the singer spitting up blood at one of them.
